March 14-17, 2010:

Dr. Hiroshi Nakajima, IEEE SMCS Distinguished Lecturer and Senior Technology Specialist of Sensing & Control Laboratory of Omron Corporation, gave two talks, in Kairouan and in Sousse, on "Socially Intelligent Agents" and "Soft Computing Applications in Industry and Consumer Fields".

Dr. Hiroshi focuses on the general solution for improvement of health in humans, machines, and energy consumptions by applying sensory inspection and computational intelligence. The solution is so called the health management technology platform which consists of four main functions; measurement, recognition, estimation, and evolution. The platform covers wide technology area mainly in computational intelligence to provide effective and efficient solutions to wide business fields.

 

March 12-16, 2010:

Dr. Robert John, Professor of Computational Intelligence from De Montfort University, Leicester, UK, gave a talk, in Sfax, on "Type-1 Fuzzy Logic Systems: Tehory and Applications", and two talks, in Sousse, about "Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Systems" and "Human Decision Making and Type-2 FLS".

Dr. John is the Director of the Centre of Computational Intelligence in UK, the Head of the Department of Informatics, and Fellow Britsh Computer Society. His research interests the Fuzzy Logic. In particular, he works with type-2 fuzzy sets, interval valued fuzzy sets and type-2 adaptive fuzzy systems. He is interested in how Fuzzy Logic can be used to model vagueness, imprecision, concepts and perceptions. Dr. John believes that type-2 fuzzy sets offer the ability to model perceptions in a way that type-1 fuzzy sets cannot. He is also interested in other aspects of modelling uncertainty.

 

March 12-14, 2010:

 

Dr. Rolf Ingold, Professor on Computer Science in the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, gave a course in Sfax on "Pattern Recognition". He is the head of the DIVA research group.

Dr. Ingold working on Document Analysis and Recognition, Speech Analysis and Processing, Multimodal Human-Machine Interaction, Biometry, and Document Engineering.

 

February 4-6, 2010:

 

Dr. Basel Solaiman, Professor on image and information processing in ENST Bretagne, Fance, gave a course on "Image Processing" in Sfax.

His current research interests include the fields of remote sensing, medical image processing, pattern recognition, neural network, and artificial intelligence.

December 18-19, 2009:

Dr. Cees Snoek, VENI research fellow at the Intelligent Systems Lab, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, gave two talks in Sfax on "Detecting Semantic Concepts in Video" and "Concept-Based Video Search".

His research interests focus on multimedia signal processing and analysis, statistical pattern recognition, content-based information retrieval, social media retrieval, and large-scale benchmark evaluations, especially when applied in combination for video retrieval.

 

December 11-12, 2009:

Dr. Daniele Mortari, AESS Distinguished Lecturer and Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University in College Station, USA, gave two talks, in Sfax, on "Recent Surprises: Attitude Rate Estimation using n-Dimension Rotations" and "Recent Surprises: The Multiplicative Error Model".

Dr. Mortari working on the field of spacecraft dynamics and control. He is AIAA Associate Fellow and member of Space Flight Mechanics Technical Committee. He has published extensively on the topics of his study, holds multiple U.S. patents and has been widely recognized for his work, including receiving two NASA’s Group Achievement award, the 2003 Spacecraft Technology Center award, and the 2007 IEEE Judith A. Resnik award.

 

December 4-5, 2009:

Dr. Alicia Casals, RAS Distinguished Lecturer and Professor in the Automatic Control and Computer Engineering Department, Technical University of Catalonia, Spain, gave two taks, in Sfax, on "Robotics", and "Human-Robot Interaction"; and one talk in Gabes on "Robotic Systems".

Dr. Alicia is leading the research group on Robotics and Vision Division of the Institute Biomedical Engineering of Catalonia, and is member of the research group GRINS: Intelligent Robotics and Systems. The research is oriented to the incorporation of visual perception to robotic systems, mainly in the area of medical robotics. In this field she is working both in rehabilitation, assistance and surgery applications.

 

November 7, 2009:

Dr. Sergios Theodoridis, IEEE Fellow, SPS Distinguished Lecturer, and Professor of Communication and Signal Processing, University of Athens, Greece, gave two talks, in Djerba Island, on "Adaptive Processing in a world of Projections", and on "Support Vector Machines: A Geometric View Point".

His research interests lie in the areas of Adaptive Learning and Signal Processing, Communications, and Pattern Recognition. He is the co-editor of the book "Adaptive System Identification and Signal Processing Algorithms", Prentice Hall 1993 and co-author of the book "Pattern Recognition", Academic Press, 4th Ed., 2009.

 

November 6, 2009:

A Panel Session was organized, in Djerba Island, by IEEE Tunisian chapters on CIS, SMCS, and SPS, discussing the New Trends on Computational Intelligence in Systems Design. The panel members are: Dr. Adel M. Alimi (Tunisia), Dr. James C. Bezdek (USA), Dr. Sergios Theodoridis (Greece), Dr. Fakhri Karray (Canada), and Dr. Volker Margner (Germany).

Their remarks and suggestions were about CI and Renewable, Sustainable Energy; Recent advances on Cognitive Machines; Robotics; and CI for Sustainable Innovation. The questions / answers session was very fruitful for the audience.

 

November 6-7, 2009:

Dr. James C. Bezdek, IEEE Fellow, CIS Distinguished Lecturer, and Professor of Computer Science at the University of West Florida, gave two talks, in Djerba Island, on "Visual Clustering in Relational Data", and "Fuzzy clustering in very large data sets".

Dr. Bezdek's research interests include multiple prototype classifier designs, mixed fuzzy-possibilistic c-means clustering models, rule extraction with clustering, generalized nearest prototype classifier networks, fusion of heterogeneous fuzzy data, target recognition with LADAR data, mammographic image analysis, topics in cluster validity, robotic control models, fuzzy learning vector quantization, clustering with genetic algorithms, and acceleration of image processing algorithms.

 

October 31-November 2, 2009:

On occasion of the Workshop on New Trends in Space Technologies in Sfax, Dr. Klaus Schilling from Wurzburg University in Germany and Dr. A. Rüstem Aslan, head of The Space Engineering Department of İstanbul Technical University in Turkey, presented talks about space and satellites.

Dr. Schilling research interests include autonomous control strategies, telematics methods, mechatronic systems, and multi-modal man-machine interfaces.

Dr. Aslan research interests include design, analysis and development of manned and unmanned rotorcraft systems, pico and nanosatellites, computational fluid dynamics, fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, in addition to defence and education technologies.

                        

 

March 24-27, 2009:

Dr. William A. Gruver, IEEE Fellow, SMCS Distinguished Lecturer, and Professor Emeritus of Engineering Science from Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada, gave a talk, in Sousse, on "Distributed Intelligence: A New Paradigm for Systems Integration". He is the head of Intelligent / Distributed Entreprise Automation Laboratory (iDEA). Dr. Gruver served as IEEE President of the Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (2004-2005), and the IEEE Division X Director (2007-2008).

Dr. Gruver's research program in robotics and intelligent systems emphasizes holonic and collaborative agent systems, distributed communications and control, distributed sensing, including their applications to manufacturing automation, distributed energy resources, and rehabilitation.
